Storylines

The mohawked Archie Brooks first appeared in Beckindale in November 1983 after having worked in a slaughter house but had been fired after accidentally causing an accident that led to one of the workers losing the use of his legs whilst operating a band saw. Archie began lingering around Beckindale for a few weeks, but eventually made friends with Jackie Merrick. However, Jackie's father Jack Sugden disapproved of Jackie spending time with Archie as he believed Archie set a bad impression.

Archie confronted Jack about his overprotective attitude of Jackie, and an argument ensued in which Archie swore to get revenge on Jack and then stormed out. Eventually, Archie received a visit from Jack who apologised to him. Archie forgave him, and he and Jackie began spending time together.

Over the following years, Archie began making enemies with many locals. He went poaching on Seth Armstrong's land and started a fight in the Woolpack much to the outrage of landlord Alan Turner and barman Amos Brearly.

However, in November 1985, Nick Bates arrived in Beckindale, and he, Archie and Jackie began regularly going to the Woolpack for drinks together. Archie and Nick caused a lot of trouble for Alan and Amos in the pub, but eventually stopped when Amos threatened them.

Archie then befriended Seth. However in August 1989, when Seth and Jackie went to shoot a fox in the woods over a £10 bet, Jackie was killed while trying to pull his rifle out of the jeep and it went off.

Archie blamed Seth for Jackie's death, and enraged, he started a fire on Seth's property along with Nick. But Archie was caught and jailed for three months while Nick escaped. When Nick visited Archie in prison, he apologised for abandoning him, Archie forgave him and gave him a note to give to Seth saying he was sorry. Seth, upon receiving the letter, went to visit Archie in prison, and forgave him.

After serving his prison sentence, Archie came home a changed man, wearing spectacles and began working in the Woolpack with Nick.

In 1990 Elsa Feldmann told Archie, shortly after had lost his virginity to her, that she was pregnant with his child. Archie was unable to cope with this revelation, but was shocked when Elsa told people that she and Archie were going to be parents. Before long Archie found himself being threatened by Elsa's stepfather Eric Pollard, who saw Archie as a lowlife and accused him of raping Elsa. However, Archie discovered that Nick was the father of Elsa's child as Nick left a note to Eric explaining everything to him.

In 1991 Archie moved in with Nick and his and Elsa's daughter Alice Bates. He then decided to quit his job at The Woolpack to become a full time child minder. Archie accepted the offer to be best man at Nick and Elsa's wedding. But Elsa called the wedding off and Archie supported Nick in his custody battle.

In 1993, Archie became very close to Zoe Tate, and the same year, they slept together and later began dating. However, Zoe eventually sat Archie down and informed him she could be a lesbian. Archie was calm at first as he realised that it was only a possibility, but then decided they should stop seeing each other.

Plane Crash and Death

In December 1993, Archie was killed in the Emmerdale plane crash[3]. Whilst he and Nick were walking home after an argument at the Woolpack with Seth and Lynn Whiteley, they were blinded by jet fuel. Nick survived but a large fire ball landed in front of Archie and he was engulfed in flames and presumably incinerated.

Archie's body was never found, and suspicion rumours whether he died or not. Nevertheless, he was pronounced dead by the Beckindale residents.
